Funding the Future with Forestry Support
Mr. Clint Davis, from the Florida Forest Service, attended the February school Board meeting to present a check to Superintendent Lanier in the amount of $141,967.41 on behalf of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. This payment reflects the distribution of the Tates Hell State Forest receipts for the fiscal year 2019-20 in accordance with Section 589, Florida Statutes.
The Florida Forest Service has supported education in Franklin County since the mid '90s and has teamed up with the Franklin County School Board to provide a local scholarship to benefit students interested in Forestry. The average length of time a forester is employed at Tate's Hell is one to two years. Providing this scholarship to a Franklin County graduate allows the candidate to return home and work in Franklin County after college. Each year the Franklin County School Board reserves a percentage from the revenue collection which is set aside in a trust for continued funding of the Franklin County Forestry Scholarship. The Forestry Scholarship will have its first successful college graduate in the Spring of 2022.
Scholarship applicants must seek a Bachelor's Degree in Forest Resource Conservation or Natural Resource Conservation from the University of Florida. Students can go to a community college for the first two years but must complete the final two years at Florida. The scholarship can be used for tuition and fees required for enrollment, books, supplies, equipment and university-sponsored housing and meal plans totaling up to $20,000 per year.
